Celebrating International Credit Union Day 2025
On Thursday, October 16, 2025, credit unions around the globe will come together to celebrate International Credit Union (ICU) Day®, a tradition that has been honored every third Thursday of October since 1948. This year marks the 77th anniversary of ICU Day, under the theme:
“Cooperation for a Prosperous World.”
ICU Day is more than just a celebration. It’s a chance to reflect on the credit union movement’s history, highlight the impact of financial cooperatives worldwide, and recognize the hard work of employees, volunteers, and members who make the movement thrive.
The History of Credit Unions
Credit unions began in the mid-1800s in Europe as a way for communities to pool resources and provide affordable financial services. The idea was simple yet powerful: people helping people. By working together, communities could ensure access to credit, fair savings opportunities, and financial stability values that continue to guide credit unions today.
Over time, the movement spread across the world, adapting to the needs of local communities but always rooted in the cooperative principle: members first.
ICCU’s Story
Here at Isabella Community Credit Union, our roots go back to Mt. Pleasant High School, where a group of teachers came together with a vision: to build a financial cooperative that would serve their community and put members’ needs above all else. What started as a small, teacher-founded credit union has grown into a trusted local financial partner serving thousands of members across Isabella County and beyond.
Our story is proof of the power of cooperation. From those early days at the high school to today, our mission remains the same: helping our members achieve their financial goals through fair, accessible, and community-focused services.

Each year, International Credit Union Day brings credit unions and financial cooperatives together for a day of reflection and celebration. Around the world, credit unions mark the occasion with fundraisers, open houses, contests, volunteering, picnics, and parades, all designed to raise awareness about the credit union difference and to celebrate members like you who make our work meaningful.
