International Credit Union Day: Celebrating the Credit Union Difference
Every year, credit unions around the world come together to celebrate International Credit Union Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the history, impact, and people behind the credit union movement.
But what exactly makes a credit union different?
It comes down to a pretty simple idea: people helping people.
Credit unions were created to give people a place to work together toward greater financial well-being. Today, that same cooperative spirit continues in communities like ours, where members aren't simply customers. They're part of something they collectively own.
You're a Member, Not a Customer
One of the biggest differences between a credit union and many other financial institutions is its ownership structure. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned by their members. When you open an account and become a member of a credit union, you become part of that cooperative.
Instead of focusing on generating profits for outside stockholders, credit unions can return value to their members through competitive rates, lower fees, helpful financial services, and investments in the communities they serve. That's why we call the people we serve members, not customers.
It Started With a Simple Idea
ICCU's own story is rooted in that cooperative spirit. In 1958, a group of local teachers came together at Mt. Pleasant High School to create what was then known as School Employees of Isabella County Credit Union.
What started as a way for a small group of educators to help one another financially grew over the decades. As our membership expanded, so did the ways we could serve our community.
Today, ICCU continues to serve members throughout our area while staying connected to the same basic idea that started it all: when people work together, we can create more opportunities for everyone.
Your Money Stays Connected to Your Community
When you choose a local credit union, your financial relationship can have an impact beyond your own account. Credit unions help members purchase homes, finance vehicles, start building savings, manage everyday expenses, and work toward financial goals. They also support local organizations, schools, events, nonprofits, and other efforts that make communities stronger.
For ICCU, being part of the community isn't something that happens only when we make a donation or sponsor an event. It's part of how we were built. Our team members live here. Our members are our neighbors. The businesses and organizations we support are part of the same communities we call home.
Financial Education Matters, Too
A good financial relationship isn't only about having somewhere to deposit a paycheck or apply for a loan. It's also about having the information and resources to make confident decisions with your money.
That's why financial education has always been an important part of the credit union philosophy.
Whether it's helping a child learn the basics of saving, giving a teenager their first experience managing an account, helping someone understand their credit score, or answering questions about buying a first home, we believe financial knowledge should be accessible. You don't have to know everything about money before walking through our doors. Asking questions is part of the process, and we're here to help.
People Helping People
Banking has changed quite a bit since 1958. We can now deposit checks from our phones, transfer money in seconds, monitor our credit scores online, and manage our accounts without ever stepping inside an office.
But even as technology changes how we manage our money, the heart of the credit union movement remains the same.
It's people helping people.
It's neighbors supporting neighbors.
It's creating financial opportunities and helping members move toward what's next.
And it's recognizing that when our members and communities grow stronger, we all benefit.
