September 11: Remembering Through Service

Each year on September 11, we pause to remember.

We remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. We honor the first responders, service members, and everyday people who showed extraordinary courage. And we remember the countless acts of kindness and compassion that followed in the days, weeks, and months afterward.

Twenty-five years later, those memories continue to remind us of something powerful: in difficult moments, people show up for one another.

Honoring a Day We Will Never Forget

For many, September 11 is a day filled with personal memories. We remember where we were, who we were with, and the uncertainty we felt as the events of that day unfolded.

For younger generations, September 11 is something they have learned about rather than experienced firsthand. That makes sharing its stories and lessons especially important.

Along with remembering the tragedy, we can remember the courage of those who ran toward danger to help others and the way communities across the country came together afterward.

It is a reminder of the difference people can make when they choose to care for one another.

Turning Remembrance Into Service

September 11 is also recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging Americans to honor those who were lost through acts of service.

Service doesn't have to be something big.

It can mean volunteering with a local organization, donating to a cause you care about, checking in on a neighbor, thanking a first responder, helping someone who is struggling, or simply choosing to be a little more patient and kind.

Small actions matter, especially when many people choose to take them together.
